Do-you-know facts

Chemicals can be acidic, neutral or basic depending on how many hydrogen ions they have. Hydrogen ions are really just protons, a small particle that has a positive charge. Scientists can find out whether a chemical is acidic, neutral or basic by testing its pH. They use a special paper, called litmus paper, to do the pH test.

MORE FACTS

Acid solutions have a pH of less than 7 (and turns blue litmus paper red) A neutral has a pH of 7. Basic solutions has a pH more than 7 (and turns red litmus blue)

Do you know what pH stands for?

pH means power of hydrogen. Therefore, using litmus paper gives an idea of how much hydrogen or protons is in a solution.

What is an acid?

An acid is a chemical that has plenty of protons in solution. Protons have a positive charge this is what makes a solution acidic solution. Most acid chemicals have a sour taste. In fact, the word "acid" comes from the Latin word acidus which means "sour".
Examples of acids are: lemon juice and vinegar.

What is an alkali?

An alkali the opposite of an acid. It is a chemical that does not have a lot of protons in a solution. Instead, a basic solution which has the ability to accept plenty of protons. An alkalis is a base that can dissolve in water. Examples of alkali are: toothpaste and household cleaners

Solutions
4. Phenolphthaein solution
5. Methyl Orange (pH 2.9-4.6)
6. Bromothymol blue (pH 6.0(yellow) to pH 7.6(blue)

Our 10 Steps to test soil

1. Wash apparatus with distilled water.
2. Put soil into beaker.

3. Add distilled water into beaker and stir.
4. Placed the folded filter paper on top of a new beaker.

5. Pour the mixture into the filtered paper.

6. Wait for mixture to be filtered.

7. Use a dropper to place various test solutions and paper into six different test tubes.
8. Use another dropper to place filtrate into the six test tubes.

9. Use tweezer to take tested paper out of the test tube to place in zip lock bag
10. Take pictures of tested solution.

Hello people, its been long since any updates!:D

Recently, we invited dear mrs chua to our hideout. She told us alot of stuff. Area for improvement and what we can do. She suggested we use the pH meter which is the most accurate among all to double check our pH values.

Anyway, HM and I finished everything TODAY. YAY. So cool right?
ALL the way until 4++.

:D

GUESS WHAT!? POA lesson is on relief and I AM BACK! haha.

From left: Penny, Jiawen, Mr Chua, Pang Ping, Shuqin, Hui Mui.

the hapy hillies! :D

thts our "cute cute" group photo.
I still have the soil texture pictures and the rest of the tests UNdone.
boo.

let me give YOU, reader of babyhilly.blogspot.com, a brief summary of what we are doing.
or basically what we have done so so soso SO far.

we have already completed most of the tests and there are still about 3 more tests to conduct,
then we will analyse the data then to finish updating the log book.

we have confidence in ourselves,
we can do it. YAY! ok. time for recess, i have to go again.
goodbye.

Our faces appears

HOORAY! we finally have a really nice family photo,
we had conducted the tests for the soil collected from the different blocks as well as the soil from the school compound.

I will have to rush for a lesson straight after this,
so this will be a short post,

take note babyhillies,
there will be some changes needed to this site,
here is the list of things to be done to make this site better,

  • Blog dates to be sychronized
  • data collected should be extended to 11 march 2006
  • include the links for the pictures of the soil in the table
  • enlarge the maps for the blocks, mainly blk 187, blk 217 and block 426.
  • credits should should should be given to every article extracted from some other websites.

all these should be done by 11 march 2006

BIG NEWS!

Our blog have to be completed by 11 march and the rest of the data should all be analysed by 16 march 2006, knowing that some of you are having a very busy week, i would like to inform you hillies that the next meeting will be held on 15 march that is on a wednesday,
all the tests SHOULD be finished by then.

Sunday, March 05, 2006

After constant pestering of HM, I decided to blog about:

HOW HARD THE SOIL WAS on Friday, 030306.
Like, FREAKING HARD LA.

And then J abandoned me for something but ,you know, I forgot what it was, reallly.

Anyway, I wanted to take a video of it la, showing that when my shovel hit the soil, the soil wouldn't even buldge, didn't even scratch it. But my phone, being pink and bimbotic, shows SYSTEM ERROR. So, I told myself, FORGET IT.

I did took photos, for the fun of it. But my cable is LOST, so too bad.

I did at a already eroded place, so the thing may be weird. What I dig out was literally SMALL ROCKS, okay?

Anyway, meeting's on MONDAY? If I didn't remembered wrongly, 2.45PM.
But, I don't think I can make it. I failed physics. So, stayback for physics re-quiz.
PP says she want to test soil.
Hallehlujah everyone.
:D

P.S. Is anyone getting sick of me always blogging here? You can raise up your hand. :D
