Do-you-know facts
Chemicals can be acidic, neutral or basic depending on how many hydrogen ions they have.
Hydrogen ions are really just protons, a small particle that has a positive charge.
Scientists can find out whether a chemical is acidic, neutral or basic by testing its pH.
They use a special paper, called litmus paper, to do the pH test.

Saturday, February 11, 2006 Changing of original hypothesisthe project was alright so far, though we failed half way, we came up with more new ideas, planned to work on a new hypothesis. the first plan was to test the soil's ph level, we will usually collect soil from our school compound. Then we will test the soil's ph level using different indicators, such as; Blue Litmus Papers, Red Litmus Papers, Universal Indicator, Bromothymyl Blue Solution, phenel something and Methyl orange. But after several tests were done, the ph level of the soil seems to be the same througout, we had the sample indicators in the log book itself. all of the indicators indicated that the ph level for the soil was near neutral. around say, ph 7. so we thought it would be boring if we couldnt conclue something that people dont know, or some facts that maybe we conclude, then prove it out to let people know. that way the whole project would be much more interesting. of course you will know that the soil's ph level is affected by its surrounding, wheather is it rain, wind, or anything of the weather. However, knowing that the ph level of the SCHOOL'S soil is neutral we decided to make use of soil from different locations, (maps of different loaction would be up soon.) if you'd realise, the different locations are all located in the west, nearer to the industrial area- JURONG ISLAND. from this point, we can find out wheather the industrial area will contribute factors that affect the soil. YES ! what a great idea you'll say. so come back to find out more about how industrial areas will affect the soil quality. pictures will be posted. find out about our experiments from the more information section. or just simply click here.
