Do-you-know facts

Chemicals can be acidic, neutral or basic depending on how many hydrogen ions they have. Hydrogen ions are really just protons, a small particle that has a positive charge. Scientists can find out whether a chemical is acidic, neutral or basic by testing its pH. They use a special paper, called litmus paper, to do the pH test.

MORE FACTS

Acid solutions have a pH of less than 7 (and turns blue litmus paper red) A neutral has a pH of 7. Basic solutions has a pH more than 7 (and turns red litmus blue)

Do you know what pH stands for?

pH means power of hydrogen. Therefore, using litmus paper gives an idea of how much hydrogen or protons is in a solution.

What is an acid?

An acid is a chemical that has plenty of protons in solution. Protons have a positive charge this is what makes a solution acidic solution. Most acid chemicals have a sour taste. In fact, the word "acid" comes from the Latin word acidus which means "sour".
Examples of acids are: lemon juice and vinegar.

What is an alkali?

An alkali the opposite of an acid. It is a chemical that does not have a lot of protons in a solution. Instead, a basic solution which has the ability to accept plenty of protons. An alkalis is a base that can dissolve in water. Examples of alkali are: toothpaste and household cleaners

Solutions
4. Phenolphthaein solution
5. Methyl Orange (pH 2.9-4.6)
6. Bromothymol blue (pH 6.0(yellow) to pH 7.6(blue)

Our 10 Steps to test soil

1. Wash apparatus with distilled water.
2. Put soil into beaker.

3. Add distilled water into beaker and stir.
4. Placed the folded filter paper on top of a new beaker.

5. Pour the mixture into the filtered paper.

6. Wait for mixture to be filtered.

7. Use a dropper to place various test solutions and paper into six different test tubes.
8. Use another dropper to place filtrate into the six test tubes.

9. Use tweezer to take tested paper out of the test tube to place in zip lock bag
10. Take pictures of tested solution.

WE ARE GOING TO SET UP A BOOTH TOMORROW.
It is for the PSLE students to get interested in Hillgrove. :D
We will be exhibiting our HANDMADE EQUIPMENT.

We shall take shifts.

  2. Sylvia
  3. Shuqin and Pangping
MDM CHAN WILL be there to help out.

Report early for stock taking too.

I got some frequently asked questions of a rain gauge, from this website.
It is very useful for the open house tomorrow.
click here to view the web page.
(:

then i realised that it is important to be as accurate as possible when reading the rain gauge. Scientists, engineers, and other professionals may use our data.

Group 2 performance:

Today after the meeting, We started off with write-up for the topics that we are suppose to do. Thinking that Mr Chua will be leaving at 12noon, we went to continue with making the instruments.

We started off with continue making the wind vane. Hui Mui continued with sanding the wood. However, when Mr Chua took a photo, there was a blackout. It was not Mr Chua's fault. It was there was something wrong with the machine. After which, Hui Mui went to help Shu Qin with cutting of plastics for the arrow. When finish cutting the plastic, we started filing and sanding. Mr Chua found some recycled materials that can be used. We also had the base for the wind vane done. We must really say a BIG thank you to Mr Chua for helping us coming out with ideas for the base.

At 12, Mr Chua wanted to leave school so we had to leave the D&T room. We went to the library but the librarian went out for lunch. We went to study corner to do our stuffs. Pang Ping and Hui Mui went for lunch. Shu Qin wanted to do her stuffs. When Pang Ping and Hui mui came back from lunch, Shu Qin told us what to do.

At 1+, we called it a day.

Group 2 will be meeting again on Monday at 10am.

Early in the morning.. at 8am.. group 2 meet to do the projects... We started out with planning and went to ask Mr Chua for advise...

After asking for advises, we started to do what we are suppose to do.. Started off with wind vane... We did not succeed in the first attempt. However, we learned a lesson. We learned that we should not make a 3D wind vane.. it will not work. At around 11am, we went to D&T room to look for some suitable materials. We found plastics and wood that are unwanted. By then Pang Ping need to go home. Hui Mui did sanding and Shu Qin did filing.

We ended at 12.30pm. Hui Mui finish sanding half of the wood and Shu Qin finish filing 1 piece of plastic.

That's all for today for Group 2. Tomorrow all the members will be meeting Mr Chua at 9am at MRL.
